Day Zero, Goal #19

Day Zero #19 - Graduate with first class honors from my Bachelor of Science degree

(Note 1: blurred out my last name for privacy -- this is a public blog after all)
(Note 2: "with distinction" = first class honors, granted for a GPA >3.5 -- really wish we did the "summa/magna cum laude" thing like the USA so my degree would look just THAT more impressive, but whatever. I guess anytime I really want someone to know my GPA, I can just send them a copy of my transcript).

My degree arrived in the mail today. It was anti-climatic. So much went into this, and it seems, so little came out.

Well, I shouldn't say that. The job I have now and the masters I'm pursuing wouldn't even be an option without this BSc., but at the same time, I wonder if it really was all "worth it". What could I have done with the past 4 years instead? Would it have led to a more successful or lucrative future than the one presently at my fingertips? Would it have made me happier? I don't actually wish I had spent my time otherwise -- I really do LOVE science -- but I do wonder what "could have been" actually looks like.

I think people regard university education with a bit of undeserved awe. At the end of the day, it's really just highschool version 2. Yes, I think it's important and yes, I think everyone should go, but I think we need to lose the worship of the almighty bachelors degree and take post-secondary for what it is: just a little more education. Does it give you an advantage in the workforce? Maybe. The boyfriend and I are still waiting to see that come true.. apparently graduating during a recession is a bit unfavorable as far as job market circumstance goes.

I'm really glad they put Chemistry before Biological Sciences. No alphabetical order rules there, it's all about which subject I loved the most. Even though my MSc. is strictly Bio, Chemistry will always have my heart.
