The Abstract

I have good intentions to get this up & running in the near future. Maybe tonight. I'm still deciding the direction I want to take it: personal? sciencey? Is there room on the world wide web for yet another twenty-something trying to figure her shit out? I can be the Carrie Bradshaw of Biological Sciences department.

You see, the real reason I want to write a blog is because I was tricked. When you first enroll in university, they tell you it's this great thing that will improve your future and secure you some amazing six-figure job at graduation, that you wouldn't have had a shot at with a measly highschool diploma. You only have to get about half-way through when you realize, a Bachelor's degree IS the new highschool diploma, and it isn't worth a thing (even though, technically, it's worth the $40,000 you paid for it). Now all the friends you thought were dumbasses for skipping out on post-secondary are the ones that own cars and houses, whilst all you have is a shoddy Mac and a few soul-crushing student loans.

No, I'm kidding. My Mac isn't shoddy at all.

Maybe it sounds cliche, but it's the passion for science that is (will always?) keeping me going. I'll endure the less-than-ideal grad student wages and work hours, because it's better than being a manager of a restaurant. Maybe it's the big P-H-D letters, the light at the end of the tunnel shining as a beacon of hope, the promise of something great. Or is it another ruse, like the Bachelors degree?

Who cares, I get to delay reality for another 5 years.

  1. Hi! This is aleeeecia from twitter. I was going to respond on twitter but my response was too lengthy. You responded to my "evolution is the creation myth of the atheists!" tweet from last week. I just HAD to tell you that it was 100% sarcasm! I found that line in this ridiculous religious pamphlet these evangelicals were passing out on halloween. I am a fellow atheist. I couldn't handle the thought that someone out there thought i was a crazy bible thumper...had to clear that up...

Anyways. Good luck with your blog!

  2. Ugh. I agree about the bachelor's degree being the new high school diploma. Not worth jack, except I'm paying $30k a year for mine. Yay life!

  3. I'm so down with the delaying reality tactic, it persuaded me quite convincingly that I wasn't on some kind of conveyor belt... was hoping I'd have figured out what I wanted to be by now though. Ho hum... maybe my gift is being adaptable? :)

Oh by the way, gotta ask, but did you catch someone trying to steal your bicycle?
